Join FirstByte

FirstByte is a Northeastern student-run initiative that provides educators with the materials and curricula to integrate computer science and engineering into their classrooms. FirstByte is over a year old now, gaining momentum in the local community, and we’re beginning the process of becoming an official Northeastern club this semester. One of the most important components of FirstByte’s program is our website (www.teachfirstbyte.org), where educators can upload, download, and give feedback on curricula.

We’re looking for a few students knowledgeable about or interested in website development to join our team as we continue to grow and expand! This is a great opportunity to learn about website development, application deployment, and working with a team on an existing codebase. Volunteers will gain valuable experience working in Python and the Django framework, while using many industry-standard AWS services. It’s an excellent project to put on a resume and talk about during co-op interviews. We can also sign off on volunteer hours as the website aims to make a difference in our local community.

Additionally, we have many other roles available for volunteers besides website development. Our Educator Enablement team connects and works one-on-one with teachers to answer their questions about curricula and materials, helping to get them up and running quickly and smoothly. We also have a dedicated Curriculum team that focuses on creating unique, interdisciplinary technology curricula that integrates into teachers’ preexisting classes and meets Massachusetts’ digital literacy standards. Our Brand and Marketing team produces marketing content and publishes blog and social media posts that engage our existing community and attract others to join. Lastly, our Administrative team manages our budget, coordinates recruitment, plans events, and more. These roles offer members fantastic opportunities to strengthen their skills in communication, networking, organization, and teamwork.

FirstByte meets in Snell Library from 7-8pm every Thursday.
